No Industry is Fully Transparent, But There Needs to Be a Level Playing Field

Tim Cross-Kovoor 07 May, 2026

The debate around transparency in the ad industry has flared up again in recent months, with both ad tech vendors and agency holding groups accused of opaque business practices (typically while they themselves have been accusing others or being intransparent).

Jonathan Lucas-Lucas, Managing Director of JLL Media, has an interesting window into transparency in the agency world, thanks to his role as an auditor. And from his perspective, transparency has been improving over time. But there’s still progress to be made — not necessarily towards full transparency, but towards a more level playing field in terms of how transparent agencies are.

In this interview, Lucas-Lucas discusses what goes on in the agency auditing world, and the dynamics behind agency transparency. Filmed at New Video Frontiers 2026 in London.
